BSNL & MTNL Merger Decision to be taken in next 4-5 Months

BSNL and MTNL decide to be merger in 4-5 months:

Telecom Secretary Rakesh Garg said that the decision on merging state-run BSNL and MTNL will be taken in the next 4-5 months. Before same kind of news spread on BSNL and MTNL merger decision although didn’t happen what we expected.

Also said, “After studying the IIM report on it then BSNL and MTNL merger decision will be taken in four-five months.”



BSNL chairman-cum-managing director, Anupam Shrivastava said MTNL will be delisted before the merger. MTNL stocks rallied 20 percent intra-day. The stocks were trading 14.46 percent up at 2.11 p.m. in the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Earlier, Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said BSNL and MTNL’s debt stood at Rs.4,459 crore and Rs.14,120 crore, respectively. However, MTNL said there is no delisting proposal under consideration of the board.

In September 2014, The department of telecommunication had set a deadline for closing the merger of MTNL and BSNL of July 31, 2015. The telecom services in Delhi and Mumbai operated by MTNL whereas BSNL offers telecom services in the rest of the country. BSNL with 61,622 mobile towers has the second largest tower portfolio among all the telecom service operators.

As on last Friday Mobile Number Portability (MNP) launched in nationwide in India among BSNL, MTNL, and other telecom providers include. Full MNP will enable subscribers to transfer their mobile numbers to any new city or locality across the country and use it as local number. Therefore, the facility was available only within a telecom circle or service area.

Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “Full mobile number portability has started from today, If a person moves from one state to another, he can keep the number with him. I would like to tell this to people of our country that from today you are the owner of your mobile number and wherever you will go your number will go with you.” in New Delhi on Friday.
